Movie Night: Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day on a Friday??? It's too perfect!

Groundhog Day is the perfect example of a silly thing that is fun to make a big deal out of for your kids.  So tonight we are going to watch Groundhog Day (obviously) and I'll tell you how we are handling the content in just a moment.

This movie will forever remind me of my "first date" with my dear friend.  She was new to our school in 9th grade and invited me to go see Groundhog Day at the theater.  That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship.  Here we are at age 40 (well, I'm 40, she's almost there) and y'all we talk just about every day!  So this movie, as annoying as it can be, holds a place in my heart.

I made groundhog cupcakes and got the idea here.

I pretty much followed Bakerella's method, but I used chocolate chips for the noses instead of sunflower seeds.  I think they turning out just darling.

I had this "grass" tablecloth on hand and stuck with black, white and green for everything else.

My kids are stuffed animal hoarders, so I grabbed this little guy and stuck him in a potted plant.  I think he's technically a prairie dog but he today he's playing the role of Punxsutawney Phil.  Personally, I think he's nailing it.

This plant might look pitiful, but I won it at bunko just days before I had my daughter.  That was almost eight years ago and it's still holding on.

So as you probably know, in the movie Bill Murray is forced to relive the same day over and over.  For dinner I thought it would be fun to have a meal that we just might choose if we had to eat the same thing day after day.  Steaks, baked sweet potatoes and roasted Brussels sprouts with pancetta are on the menu.

We are trying something new tonight and watching the movie on VidAngel.  Some wise and like-minded friends told me about this.  It's a service you use to filter movies to help keep them family friendly.  How great is that???

Here's hoping you have a fun Friday and that we see an early spring!

Movie Night: The LEGO Ninjago Movie

This post contains affilate links.

It's movie night and this one is too fun.  The LEGO Ninjago Movie was a big hit with us!  If you're new to my blog, read the background on movie night here.

For the table all it took was a trip to our playroom to round up some LEGO stuff.  I put a black napkin on the big LEGO head to give him a Ninjago look.  After watching the movie, I wish I'd added a green headband.

The place settings were my favorite part.  I used a black napkin for the mask.  I love these napkins and have them in several colors.  I bought this printable for the eyes.  You could DIY this part, but for $1.99 it was fast, easy and looks great!

For dinner I made Slow Cooker Pineapple Chicken (fitting with the theme) and served it over rice.  I didn't get a photo, but it was delicious.

For dessert I made candy sushi.  It's so easy.  I made rice krispie treats and topped them with Swedish Fish and Fruit by the Foot.

My kids went crazy for them!

This movie is really funny, even for adults.  We all got a kick out of it!

Happy Friday!

Movie Night: My Little Pony: the Movie

Movie NightAmy WileyComment

Pro tip... if you want to make your daughter squeal with delight when she gets home from school, just put a giant Rainbow Dash balloon on your table.  Works every time!

This is a great example of a movie that is much more fun to do as a movie night at home instead of coughing up the cash to see it in the theater.

I put this one together really quickly after a trip to the party store for napkins, confetti, and of course the giant balloon.   There was a smaller version but it said “happy birthday.”  My daughter has played with it non-stop ever since, so it was completely worth it to me.

Confetti on the table is always a hit.

Having a boy and a girl, if we stuck to things that please them both our options would be limited and boring.  My son was totally game for this, and the next movie night will be more his taste.  I do my best to keep it pretty balanced.

Did you know there’s a My Little Pony Pandora Station? Well now you do! I always try to match our dinner music to the theme.

I won’t give you any spoilers on whether or not the ponies were able to save the Friendship Festival.  You’ll just have to see for yourself!

I hope your weekend is full of ponies, confetti, giant balloons, friendship and magic!
